It feels good to be back on the west-coast. This weekend I’ll be re-recording the narration for the film; I’m probably going to head into the office on Saturday just to make sure I’m in a 100% sound-proof environment. Once I have a clean narration track, I’ll have to race to get that cut into the film within the next two weeks, tighten up a few edits in the film, and find a way to afford a quick temp-sound pass! If I can pull all of that off before November 1st, we’ll make submission deadlines for Hot Docs, SXSW, AAFF, Tribeca and Sundance (we have an extension for Sundance). Once we submit to these festivals - all of which, with the exception of Ann Arbor, are expecting For Thousands of Miles after our face-to-face meetings during Film Week - then I have to track down a vintage penny-farthing bicycle for an archival recreation scene. But that’s another story for another post.  I’m nervous. I’m excited. I’m trying to stay focused.

Last year Erica and I road-tripped it from Los Angeles to SXSW. I had decided - last year, when going through all the footage at home - that I would split the trip into 3 parts: the drive out, SXSW itself, and the drive home. For whatever reason, I just found the leftover footage from our long drive back home sitting on my drive - having never been edited or shared. So, to right that wrong, and finish what I started, here’s the last part of SXSW 2011… late, but still.

Vu joined us for the drive home - and we spent most of our time listening to podcast and taking photos on the side of the road.

SXSW Interview with Dina

Trends in Web series, why dramas are tough right now and what’s ahead for blip.tv in 2011. From WebProNews. (via bliptv)

Two quick points to this: 1) Was very happy to see Zadi and Epic FU featured during this interview. 2) I’m really, really, really glad that the average length of shows or content is moving closer and closer to 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 40 minutes. I can’t begin to exprese how strongly I disagreed with the three minute hotspot mentality of creators. The internet not only allows for niche’ ideas and communities, but it also allows story structuring that would never be permitted in a TV environment. So, I’m excited, very excited, to see where storytellers take their ideas now that the general audience is growing more and more accepting of long-form content. 

1) Running into the multi-talented Mike Hedge at the conference center. 2) A crowd of people gathering around one of the biggest / sweetest dogs I’ve ever met. This was just a bear of a dog - and he was so gentle and eager to be petted and shake hands. 3) Hanging out with Vu and Brian at Cafe’ Crepe. 4) Erica talking about recording her being a bad idea on account of sleeping on a futon the last three days - also, Dan has a pretty awesome laugh. Just saying. 5) Getting 60d footage of the horse-drawn carriages in Austin; which I’m sad we didn’t make the time to ride. 6) Laughing to the point of tears over a billboard that, because of the strange font used, read Bowling Expo 2082! 7) Helping a caterpillar across the sidewalk - not sure why, but this day there were actually dozens of these caterpillars on the sidewalk.

erica and i attended sxsw this year on a bit of whim :) we made a road trip of the experience and did our best while in austin to help out the bui brothers, cnn, vimeo and smashface during interactive. it was a very fun, hectic, scrambled and memorable time.

I recorded 4 parts during the long drive home from Austin, TX to LA after SXSW with Mike Ambs and Erica Hampton. I really just recorded some of the first bits of the drive… and although we planned on wrapping it up in the end… in the haze of our excitement in getting home after being on the road for 2 days… we forgot. 

I promise that I will try to make this podcast more interesting. Don’t confuse that for me promising it WILL become more interesting, though. 

I can’t say that others will find this enjoyable to listen to - but parts of it make me laugh; especially where we all had just woken up after spending a night in the truck, who knew we sounded so lost and disorientated before breakfast.

The other night Erica and I stayed up till around 7 in the morning editing - which makes, as far as I can remember, our first all night’er together - she was cutting the above video for SXSW and I was finishing up part 2, which I posted here a few days ago. 

Both of us still have a few fixes and alternative shots we’d like to apply before calling the edits final, but regardless, I was so proud of Erica’s edit; and yes, perhaps my opinion is biased, but she’s been shooting a lot of video with our new Canon 60d and this could be considered one her first real edits - she has cut, using iMovie, longer videos in the last few months, for example this 9 minute long collection of clips for Xander’s first xmas in Los Angeles - but I think the above SXSW video was something very different for her.

part 2/3 : south-by interactive

Especially the Light After Dark party, and I’m not just pointing that out because this is Vimeo and they put so much of it together, I’m pointing it out because it was an *awesome* party - one of the more ambitious events I’ve ever been to.

Before leaving for SXSW, I exported several different monitor-ratios from my 52 hz photoshop file and emailed them to two design / inspiration sites I frequent: TSA and The Fox is Black; but I’ve yet to hear anything back from either, and rather then let these wallpapers collect dust, I thought I would share them here.  This design comes in the following shapes and sizes, choose whichever works best for you: 2560 x 1440, 1920 x 1200, 1680 x 1050, 1440 x 900, 1280 x 800, iPad, iPhone, or download the entire pack here.  Oh, and before I forget, a quick note about this design - the spiked symbol above is actually the audio wave-form of the 52 hertz whale wrapped into a circle:  I brought the loneliest mix into Soundtrack Pro, did a high-res screencap from that, brought it into Photoshop, increased the pixel resolution quite a bit, cleaned up the edges and background, used some color / texture effects from Camera+ and then used a few layer styles as a finishing touch. Today was the first day I slept in since the 9th; Erica and I said goodbye to Vu last night after two days on the road - most of which Vu actually drove, he is a cross-country driving-machine - and headed north towards home, making it in just minutes before midnight. 

I’m about to start editing my SXSW video for Vimeo, but before I get caught up in Final Cut, I wanted to write a few things down about this year in Austin. Since I’m still recovering from a post-south-by, lack-of-caffeine induced headache, I think I’ll keep this post simple and go with a bullet list of highlights: 

That’s far from everything that happened, but FCP is just about finished at importing the last of my HFs20 footage, which means it’s time to start cutting. 

    1) Trying to set up a self-portrait in the old LA zoo bear caves - this roll of film was later ripped apart in the middle of rewinding. 2) Giving some love to giant, giant bulldog with some breathing issues. 3) Erica getting her violence on with some kind of Star Wars game at Target. 4) Lots of foot twisting and clapping and intertwining during a phone call to Rachel. 5) On the road between Los Angeles and Austin for SXSW. 6) Stopping to poke around and photograph abandoned places and things on the side of hwy 10. 7) Meeting Daniel and Andrea outside the CNN Grill.

    Erica and I helped cover some of the set up and behind-the-scenes of the Light After Dark party, I only had time to trim a few clips this morning before heading back out to the Conference Center. Diplo and Eclectic Method were pretty amazing. Can’t wait to edit my experience at south-by this year.
