Marfa, Texas

Marfa was founded in the early 1880s as a railroad water stop, and grew quickly through the 1920s. The town derives its name from the wife of a railroad executive, who reportedly suggested the name “Marfa” after reading the name in the Fyodor Dostoevsky novel The Brothers Karamazov.

Added to my list of places I need to spend a week wandering around in…

Marfa, Texas

Marfa is an fascinating little town in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert. It’s a 7 hour drive from Austin and a 3 hour drive to El Paso. In the 70’s, artist Donald Judd bought up buildings and hangers to permanently install his art. Today old banks and grocery stores house his once functional studios and Marfa is home to many artists and galleries. The town is both eerie and beautiful. If you’re looking for some inspiration and a little adventure I recommend a road trip to Marfa.

Group of Researchers At Texas College Hacks Drone In Front of DHS

A group of researchers led by Professor Todd Humphreys from the University of Texas at Austin Radionavigation Laboratory recently succeeded in raising the eyebrows of the US government. With just around $1,000 in parts, Humphreys’ team took control of an unmanned aerial vehicle owned by the college, all in front of the US Department of Homeland Security.

After being challenged by his lab, the DHS dared Humphreys’ crew to hack into a drone and take command. Much to their chagrin, they did exactly that.

Humphrey tells Fox News that for a few hundreds dollar his team was able to “spoof” the GPS system on board the drone, a technique that involves mimicking the actual signals sent to the global positioning device and then eventually tricking the target into following a new set of commands. And, for just $1,000, Humphreys says the spoofer his team assembled was the most advanced one ever built.

“Spoofing a GPS receiver on a UAV is just another way of hijacking a plane,” Humphreys tells Fox. The real danger here, however, is that the government is currently considering plans that will allow local law enforcement agencies and other organizations from coast-to-coast to control drones of their own in America’s airspace.

“In five or ten years you have 30,000 drones in the airspace,” he tells Fox News. “Each one of these could be a potential missile used against us.”

Domestic drones are already being used by the DHS and other governmental agencies, and several small-time law enforcement groups have accumulated UAVs of their own as they await clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration. Indeed, by 2020 there expects to be tens of thousands of drones diving and dipping through US airspace. With that futuristic reality only a few years away, Humphreys’ experiment suggests that the FAA may have their work cut out for them if they think it’s as easy as just approving domestic use anytime soon. After all, reports Newser, domestic drones are likely to use the same unencrypted GPS signals provided to civilians, allowing seemingly anyone with $1,000 and the right research to hack into the system and harness a UAV for their own personal use.

“What if you could take down one of these drones delivering FedEx packages and use that as your missile?” Humphreys asks. “That’s the same mentality the 9-11 attackers had.”

via mobylosangelesarchitecture:

i just got back from nyc and montreal and el paso.

unfortunately i wasn’t in montreal long enough to take any pictures, but i did have a good 36 hours in el paso to wander around and take pictures of el paso baking in the sun.

during the day saturday it was, i think, around 105 degrees, which isn’t all that hot, but hot enough to make el paso look sort of apocalyptic and empty (keeping in mind that i say ‘apocalyptic and empty’ in good ways, to me ‘apocalyptic and empty’ are terms of endearment.  maybe i should discuss this in therapy. hm).

in any case here are some pictures of el paso looking endearingly apocalyptic and empty in the noon sun.

and, for random juxtaposition, is el paso looking a lot less empty (although possibly apocalyptic, but in a different way, and involving lots of people).

and to everyone in montreal and el paso: thank you for a great weekend.

Filed under: this time last year.

Last year Erica and I road-tripped it from Los Angeles to SXSW. I had decided - last year, when going through all the footage at home - that I would split the trip into 3 parts: the drive out, SXSW itself, and the drive home. For whatever reason, I just found the leftover footage from our long drive back home sitting on my drive - having never been edited or shared. So, to right that wrong, and finish what I started, here’s the last part of SXSW 2011… late, but still.

Vu joined us for the drive home - and we spent most of our time listening to podcast and taking photos on the side of the road.

This is the party we threw that melted everyone’s face off.

We threw a small party at SXSW.

Loved this party. Loved this video! Erica and I were pretty dorked out at how many of our shots made it into this. So fun to watch. So fun to be a part of.

1) Running into the multi-talented Mike Hedge at the conference center. 2) A crowd of people gathering around one of the biggest / sweetest dogs I’ve ever met. This was just a bear of a dog - and he was so gentle and eager to be petted and shake hands. 3) Hanging out with Vu and Brian at Cafe’ Crepe. 4) Erica talking about recording her being a bad idea on account of sleeping on a futon the last three days - also, Dan has a pretty awesome laugh. Just saying. 5) Getting 60d footage of the horse-drawn carriages in Austin; which I’m sad we didn’t make the time to ride. 6) Laughing to the point of tears over a billboard that, because of the strange font used, read Bowling Expo 2082! 7) Helping a caterpillar across the sidewalk - not sure why, but this day there were actually dozens of these caterpillars on the sidewalk.

Kent is an unincorporated village in Culberson County, in West Texas. It lies just north of Interstate 10 at Exit 176. As of 2005, its composition was a population estimated at 60 residents and three small businesses - a general store, a service station and a post office, as well as ruins of a public school and other businesses which flourished until the 1960s. Currently it has no medical, pharmaceutical, public educational, legal, police, fire or other governmental services beyond the post office within its boundaries, the nearest source of these being in Van Horn, 37 miles west. There are also no motels, hotels or trailer / RV parks. Local government is unpaid and informally organized among the citizens.
