A few years ago someone asked me if I liked MLK. I half laughed and said that of course I did, not really understanding the question: although - knowing that this person was pro Bush, pro Iraq War - I knew that they enjoyed trying, without much luck, to get under my skin.
But he came back with, “even though he was a cheater?” - I knew before that MLK had been involved in affairs, despite being a married man. I find that kind of behavior extremely unsettling and unforgivable… but I’m not naive enough to believe that anyone is above making mistakes. All of us do things that hurt others… all of us will die with regrets and burned-bridges… but sadly, very, very few of us will ever leave a mark like MLK.
I’m just saying.
